Scandinavian Flat Plane Carving
The premise is simple get a block of carving wood, trace out a rough pattern and use a sharp knife to carve the pattern. I have been working at learning this form of folk art for the past couple of years. I have a long way to go. Faces and particularly eyes are what bring the carvings to life. I was surprised that this was not as easy as it sounds or when watching a master carver do it.
I participate in a weekly carving class taught at the American - Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. We benefit from having a master carver teaching and helping us as well as great community of people learning the art form.
About the sharp knife, you need band-aids to go with it. They should come as a kit. Here are a couple of samples of some of my early carvings. I hope I can improve.
